DEVELOPMENT OF CRYOGEL MEMBRANES FOR THE REMOVAL OF TEXTILE DYES FROM WASTEWATER

RESUMO:
Water resources are severely polluted by industrial waste, particularly synthetic dyes originating from the textile, leather, paper, and food processing industries. These chemical pollutants are often highly toxic, mutagenic, and non-biodegradable, posing a critical threat to human health and ecological balance. To address this environmental problem, this study focused on developing a fast, easily applicable, and highly reusable cryogel membrane for the effective removal of Cibacron Brilliant Blue FN-G (CBB FN-G), a frequently used synthetic dye, from aqueous environments. For this purpose, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-4-vinylbenzoic acid), or p(HEMA-4VBA), cryogel membranes were successfully synthesized and characterized. The adsorption conditions of the membranes were optimized to achieve maximum efficiency. The study revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 19120.37 µg/g. This peak capacity was attained at an initial CBB FN-G dye concentration of 1000 µg/mL, an optimal pH of 4, and a contact time of 60 minutes. Furthermore, the reusability of the synthesized membranes was tested over five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The results demonstrated an 87% desorption rate for the adsorbed dye. The membranes maintained a high adsorption capacity without significant efficiency loss, even after the fifth cycle, proving their excellent reusability. Ultimately, this project successfully presents the development of a low-cost, easily producible, and highly sustainable material that can be repeatedly utilized for the effective removal of the model dye CBB FN-G from industrial wastewater before it enters the ecosystem.
